EM Methods for Biological Discovery

生物电镜应用方法学

Development of Biological EM has been driven by the demand for biological discovery, as well as technological improvement in mulitple research areas. Through cryo-EM resolution revolution since 2013 and the great success of Alphafold in 2021, it has become clear that next-generation structural biology (NGSB) will go far beyond protein folding and focus on high resolution, high throughput, in situ, and in action.

Our research has an emphasis on innovative application and development of EM methods, exemplified in achieving the first high-resolution single-particle cryo-EM structure of membrane protein, first integration of nanodisc technology and cryo-EM of ABC transporters in lipid bilayer, and first better-than-3-A-resolution RNA structure through nucleotide nanotechnology.

Our ongoing work is to establish new ways of using EM to gain unprecedented biological insights, as well as to integrate the technologies from different desciplines for transforming Biological EM.
